Dividend yield is yearly dividend per share divided by current price. It tells income investors what the stock pays them to wait.
High yield needs verification: divide by a crashed price and any dividend looks generous. Check payout ratio (under ~80%) and free-cash-flow cover before trusting yields above ~6%.
Example
Coal India paying Rs 24 on a Rs 400 price yields 6%. If earnings cover it 1.5x from operating cash, the income thesis holds; if paid from debt, it does not.
