Market capitalisation is share price multiplied by total shares - what buying every share would cost. India broadly calls the top 100 large-caps, 101–250 mid-caps, the rest small-caps.
Size predicts behaviour: large-caps offer liquidity and stability, small-caps offer growth with gut-wrenching drawdowns. Most multibaggers start small; most frauds do too.
Example
A Rs 50 stock with 100 crore shares (Rs 5,000 crore cap) is 'bigger' than a Rs 5,000 stock with 10 lakh shares (Rs 500 crore). Price per share alone says nothing about size.

Frequently asked questions
Large-cap vs small-cap - which returns more?
Small-caps have outperformed over long stretches with far deeper crashes. Match the cap to your stomach, not just your spreadsheet.
Can market cap change without price moving?
Yes - bonuses, splits, buybacks and fresh issuance all change share count. Watch corporate actions alongside price.
